The Spot

When you have a breaking putt and know the ball is going to curve one way or another you correctly set your aim to 'a spot' that's a few inches away from the hole. Your goal is to start rolling your putt at that spot and let the ball gradually curve into the hole. The photo shows that I'm aiming about a foot to the left of the hole, expecting a left to right curve. What I find many amateurs do incorrectly though is the last time they look at the target right before the swing, they look at the hole itself instead of at the spot. You don't want to look at the hole you want to look at the spot, or where you want to start the ball. If the last thing your brain sees is the hole you'll start the ball there and will end up off line. Simply look at the spot and try to roll the ball right there. You hear the announcers on TV say that every putt is a straight putt and they're right. You're trying to go from point A to point B. The curve of the ball just happens as is turns toward the hole.
